Bunk Beds For Kids - The Most Fun They Can Have Going to Bed

Bunk beds for kids come in so many fun styles it's hard to make up your mind. You can get beds that look like a fairy princess castle or a dollhouse, all done up in pastel pinks and purples, perfect for a young girl's dream escape. Some of these are so elaborate that you can't see the top bunk behind the facade of the castle. The little nooks, crannies and windows of the dollhouse can also be used for storage and to display special treasures. Some have a sort of tower front which also serves as a bookcase. The window of the castle allows the sleeper on top to look out.

Kids Storage Chest

Another fun concept has a tent on the lower side and a slide to get down from the top. These come in bright primary colors or, for the child of an outdoors enthusiast, full camouflage. The bottom area is completely covered in camouflage and the attached tent has a zip open door and screened in windows with flaps that roll up. A matching chest completes the theme.

Kids Storage Chest

Bunk beds for kids can also look like race cars or woodsy forts. Besides the common ladder to climb to the top, there are some which have actual stairs to the top beside and above a built-in dresser. Not all bunks have twin beds. Some are set up to have a full on the bottom and a twin on top. Some bunk beds for kids come set up for three, with two sleeping areas on top, and one bunk and a desk setup on the bottom.

Loft-type bunk beds for kids, with a desk area or storage underneath, are available in a wide variety of materials. Some are whimsical and juvenile, but some are solid, massive pieces of furniture that would look almost as at home in your living room as in your kid's room. There is a solid wood computer desk which looks like a combination of an entertainment center and a dresser. It has 7 drawers and a door on the side behind the shelving area. It has a bed on top and a trundle on the bottom that pulls out for sleeping. The door, drawers, and bottom trundle all have matching door pulls, so the trundle looks like a big drawer when it is closed. The area underneath the computer has a keyboard tray that pulls out for use while the bed is tucked away.

Bunk beds for kids come in a variety of materials and all price ranges. You can buy a bed that is sleek and austere metal or you can go for the fully painted cottage version with every detail including flowerpots and shutters. Wood bunk beds are available in veneers or solid wood, made out of everything from pine to cherry to oak. White-painted furniture is always popular for a child's room, and there are a variety of styles to choose from, from classic to modern. Bright colors or pastels, warm wood or clean striking finishes, there are so many choices that you are bound to find the perfect one for your kids.

How to Organize a Chest of Drawers

Synonymous with the bedroom, and perhaps disorganization, a chest of drawers doesn't need to be black hole. Chests usually come in 5, 6, or 7 drawer varieties, with either a single or a double top drawer and can be found throughout the house. Wherever your drawers are, whether the bedroom or the kitchen, they should be kept spic-and-span to maximize efficiency and avoid lost objects. This, however, is probably easier said than done. But a few quick tricks will keep your drawers free of unwanted clutter, and stocked full of the things you use most.

Kids Storage Chest

Bedroom Tips
Home to socks and underpants, pajamas and jeans, people often stick every which thing into their bedroom drawers. If it doesn't need to be hung in the closet, it probably can be found stuffed or mashed into the back of some drawer. This can lead to be bit of a mess. No worries, a few simple tricks will have you unstuffed in no time.

Kids Storage Chest

Once every season, empty your drawers to reorganize and reconsider what have; are you using all your white t's? Have some forgotten pajamas? Take the opportunity to purge and minimize, and keep your chest of drawers from excessive bulge. With seasonal clean-outs, you will be sure that each nook and cranny of this valuable piece of furniture is being used accordingly.

When thinking of where items should be placed in your chest, the most often used items should be the easiest to access. Items such as winter wares or workout clothes can be placed where bending or standing on tip-toes are required. Likewise, consider using the bottom drawer for excess baby clothes, or other items that don't get quite as much use.

Couples usually prefer a double top drawer, so as to divide at least that section evenly. If you have a single top-drawer, but share it with a partner, consider a drawer divider. For extra storage space, baskets can also top your chest and be used for socks or other small items that aren't too personal for display.

Kitchen Tips
Chest of drawers located in the kitchen are different beasts entirely; with items ranging from pens to rubber bands to forks to phone books, regular organization is key to keeping household items in check and easily accessed. Instead of keeping everything everywhere, choose organizational "helpers" based on your needs.

Cutlery trays are essential, to keep your forks from your knives and so on. Your excess ice cube trays can double for drawer organizers-easily housing paper clips, rubber bands, and other smaller items.

Entertain often? Consider tagging drawers to help your guests follow your organizational lead. Especially in areas often used during parties, tags could leave no confusion where things go.

If there is a primary chef in the house, they should have a voice in how the kitchen drawers are arranged, as they will be using them most often. Be sure the families understands the system and abides by it, for easy access to all your kitchen goodies.

The key to all organizing is to create systems that work for you and your family. If it isn't according to your logic, you probably won't use it. Also, like the ice tray, don't be afraid to organize with tools that are convenient, even if they are serving a purpose for which they weren't originally intended.

Twin Mattress Toppers

Toy Storage For Your Young Child's Room

You just took a look in your child's room and see the usual mess: toys scattered everywhere to the point of breakage! You dread what has to happen next: the endless, ongoing struggle when you ask your children to clean it up. The dilly-dallying young children master so perfectly when they don't want to clean up the glorious mess they just created can make us just a little crazy!

Kids Storage Chest

Here's a different kind of solution to that problem: consider storing toys in your child's room so that clean-up is easy and becomes a learning activity. It's simple, really. You just provide a space for each category of toys in a container that is easy to handle and makes the toys easy to see. You also want to place toys and shelves on the child's level for easy, independent access. By child's level is meant that nothing would be above the height the child can easily reach, i.e. not at adult height level. All shelves, storage containers, toys and materials should be reachable easily by the child.

Kids Storage Chest

In my previous article we discussed the division of your child's room into play sections that encompass all possible types of play: a pretend section, an art section, a construction section and a toy section. When young children put toys in these various sections they learn to categorize and make sense of the world around them.

We'll look at each of these sections separately and talk about how to store the materials included there.
Place a few wall hooks in the pretend section for hanging dress-up clothes. Be sure these hooks are at the child's level. If the room is large you could purchase a small toy closet instead, though that isn't necessary and will take up more space. A toy bed for dolls and teddy's would be a good place for the babies to rest (when they aren't already sleeping on your child's bed! ) Dishes and kitchen items could be stored on and in your toy stove and refrigerator if you chose to include these. A small open shelf unit is an alternative for storage dishes, pots and pans. Cooking items such as pine cones, bottle caps, etc. may be stored in cardboard boxes or microwave containers on the small stove or shelf.

Art materials need containers to hold crayons, paints, glue, brushes, and odds and ends like bits of wood, sequins, carpet scraps, etc. all mentioned in my last article. See-through containers work best since they allow the child to choose desired items without hauling everything out of a box to see what's inside.. Microwave or cardboard containers are good for this purpose. You can choose the size and shape needed for each item. Flat containers work well for items such as bottle caps or its of wood; long round containers for brushes; larger flat containers for paints and crayons. A low open shelving unit is ideal for storage of these containers since it will be easy for children to return the items to their location after use. Construction and writing paper would go on one of the low shelves.

It would also be helpful to label storage containers as well as their spot on the shelf. You could use a picture of the item to label it, since most young children don't read enough for words to make sense. A photograph or a cut-out of the item from its' original box can easily be glued onto the container. Another label on the shelf where the container is stored is helpful. This helps your child keep things organized consistently instead of just throwing containers here and there and then wondering what's what the next time she wants to work with these materials.

Materials in the toy section may also be placed on a low shelf unit placed at the child's level. Containers for magnets, scales and balances, washers, etc. may be added in microwave dishes or cardboard containers.
Storage of construction materials might be placed on the same shelf as the toy section on the lower shelf since these materials might be heavy. Washers, magnets, scales and balances, etc. may be stored in microwave dishes or cardboard boxes as well.

Initially you may want to work together with your child to clean up the materials and help her to understand the process. Make the clean-up playful by singing songs and playing games such as who can put away the most toys in the shortest time. Some parents may even want to arrange the room together with your child and share the decisions of what goes where.

Note that when your child cleans up her materials in this type of room arrangement she is learning to categorize, a very important skill for young children to master. To know that the world is not just a random and confusing place, but that there is a pre-existing order is a foundation for future learning including reading, writing and numbers. To know that a teapot goes in the pretend section, a paintbrush in the art section and so on, is a lesson that will provide a good foundation.

While this type of room arrangement takes some initial thought and time on your part, it is so worth it in the long run. Not only will you will save time on clean-up day after day but your child's play will be more meaningful. And your child will get to the point where she does it independently. Instead of the same old tug-of-clean-up-your-room-war, you and your child can have more fun, quality time together.

3 Ideas For Storing Kid's Toys and Keeping Clutter Out of Sight

Forget eyesores like plastic bins or toy chests that just don't fit in with your stylish decor to store toys in public spaces such as living rooms. There are far more fashionable ways to hide toys and the inevitable kid clutter that ends up all over the floor and in every corner when you've got kids.

Kids Storage Chest

Here are three alternatives to keeping the clutter at bay in an attractive manner:

Kids Storage Chest

Table Ottoman: These cool ottomans reveal a secret that no one but you and your child has to know about. Flip open the top and the inside sports plenty of room to store your kid's stuff. Shut the lid and the ottoman is an elegant cocktail table that serves a dual purpose. Leather is a great choice as it wipes clean in a breeze. Look for one with child-proof hinges that won't shut down on tiny fingers.

Window Seat Box: You can buy one, or if you're handy you can easily make one of these attractive boxes that fit right below a window. When closed, a window seat provides a fantastic spot to read a good book with a great view. And once you lift the top, this box doubles as a spot to hide the mess that no one will know about.

Baskets: If your budget is super tight and you're not the DIY type, a large basket can do the trick to pack toys out of view. You can slip smaller baskets onto a bookcase shelf or even in a cabinet, while a bigger basket with a cover can be tucked next to a chair to double as an end table.

Get creative with any extra room in the kitchen or even a built-in, as these can be the ideal spot to hide some of the clutter, too. If you must stick to plastic containers, opt for something you can hide under an end table or behind a big club chair. Shallow containers that can slide under the couch to hold books or smaller toys like blocks are easy to put out of sight when guests arrive.

Make sure to teach kids to quickly pick up toys at the end of the day and toss them into these boxes. Avoid just piling toys in a corner if at all possible, as the point is to keep them out of view entirely so your home doesn't look like a daycare center when family and friends drop by.

Teaching Your Kids to Get Organized

It's hard trying to keep a house nice and neat when you are constantly picking up after your toddler. I'm amazed how quickly our place turns from orderly and spacious to cluttered and crowded. It can be overwhelming if you don't have the help you need.

Kids Storage Chest

As a mom you may feel that your children shouldn't have to worry about household chores and responsibilities when they are small. However, not teaching your children how to be responsible at a young age is providing an injustice that will affect their adult lives. First, we should set a good example and then give our kids the tools to keep at it. We need to set different expectations for the appropriate age of our kids. Here's a list of suggestions to motivate you to get your kids organized based on age.

Kids Storage Chest

- Simplify: Kids from 1 ½ to 4 years old
As soon as baby can walk, you should get her to help you clean up stuffed animals and small toys that will fit in her hands. Always be encouraging and affirmative with your words. She loves hearing positive feedback. This action will also associate a good experience with helping mommy and daddy clean up. If you keep a toddler's room fairly simple by using a large toy chest to store toys, this will cut down on clutter and disarray.

- Creativity: Kids from 4 ½ to 8 years old

School-age kids typically accumulate more possessions by this age. It's important to go through all their clothes, toys and books. Weed out what you can so you'll have less to store. Giving your children more containers that are specified and labeled for games and clothes will help her to know where to put items. Multicolored storage drawers are ideal and accessible to their height. Create unique dividers like hanging organizers that she can decorate and design herself. Kids love to have their own creations around their rooms.

- Responsibility: Kids from 9 to 12 years old
By the time your child reaches the fourth grade she should have scheduled chores in place. They are quite capable to keep their room clean so it's up to you on how you deal with the consequences if it's not up to par. They are usually more rebellious by this age so you should let them have a space that will allow them a little more freedom. Their bedrooms are becoming their own place to hang out with friends and chit chat on their phones so be open to letting them create a unique space even if that means you have to redecorate. Kids love products that show their unique personality. The last thing you want is to stress over a bedroom that is truly their own. By this age all your advice and persistence over the years should pay off.

Find Uses for an Over the Door Shoe Rack in Every Room of the House

When it comes to organizing, sometimes it takes a little creativity and ingenuity in order to find a product that best meets your needs. In fact, this is a good thing because thinking outside the box often means that you can save money in the process. Sure, there are storage chests made specifically for lingerie, but they are generally quite expensive. If you want to cut corners while still finding a way to contain your unmentionables, consider an over the door shoe rack. The pockets are the perfect size, it's easy to find what you need and, most importantly, the price is right.

Kids Storage Chest

In fact, you'll likely find that the price is so good, you're looking around your house for other ways to use an over the door shoe rack. By all means, if you need shoe storage options, use it for its intended purpose. After that, if you have more doors, you're sure to find uses for this great organization tool, even in the kitchen! That's right, they work great in pantry for storing small packets, spices and even canned goods.

Kids Storage Chest

An over the door shoe rack is also quite at home in a baby's nursery because of the relatively small size of everything related to a baby. Let's face it, a drawer full of baby socks is nothing but a mess, but a couple of pockets filled with booties is the height of organization. Additionally, you can store rolled baby undershirts and pants, preemie sized diapers, and bibs, for example.

In reality, there are few rooms in the house, if any, where you can't find a use for an over the door shoe rack. In the kids' room, they're great for keeping track of small toys and collections. In the bathroom, use one to organize makeup, toiletries and cotton balls. In the sewing room, store ribbon, bias tape and thread within easy reach. Before you know it, you'll have every pocket filled.

Fun With Unfinished Wood Boxes

Once in a while, the urge to do something creative strikes us all. You don't have to be good at crafty things to enjoy doing them, and you don't have to make your crafts complicated to feel good about the end result. Some people really get into crafts and come up with some of the most amazing things, but you don't have to. All you have to do is enjoy your craft, or spend time doing a simple craft with your kids to show them how fun creating new things can be. Unfinished wood boxes can be a lot of fun to decorate and they can be very simple yet very fun craft projects for just about anyone.

Kids Storage Chest

The best thing about unfinished wood boxes is that you can make them to be just about anything you want. You can usually find these in most craft stores both online and locally, and they come in a multitude of sizes. The most common size you will find is the size that makes a great jewelry box for kids, but there are plenty of great sizes out there. You can find ones large enough to be toy boxes or storage boxes, or you can find them small enough to hold a special ring or small memento.

Kids Storage Chest

You have to choose either paint or stain when working with unfinished wood boxes. Those are the two most common yet easy ways to put a base on the unfinished wood. You can also do things like decoupage, but if you are not too crafty, you may not want to work on something that can turn out to be complicated. Stain and paint are easy yet fun. Unfinished wood will soak up a lot of pain and stain, so be prepared to give your box quite a few coats before you go on to the next stage of your craft.

Once you have started with your unfinished wood boxes, you can then use whatever you want to the rest of the box. Some people like to put a cover or lacquer over the paint or stain to make sure the wood is protected and to add a slick, shiny finish. You can glue whatever you like on the box, or you can use sponges to add different shapes and designs. Your box does not have to be perfect. Even if you just add stickers you have creates something unique and you have shown your kids how much fun creating can be, even if it is easy as pie.

If you find that you love working with unfinished wood boxes, you can easily share your new craft with everyone that you know. If you are really good with them, you may even have found a new hobby that could pay off. If nothing else, you can share your crafts with your kids. Their imagination is important to their upcoming or ongoing education. The more you inspire them, the better their imagination is going to work for them. Crafts are not only relaxing and fun, they are also part of a well-rounded education.

Posture Miseducation in Our Schools

The other day I happened to see a half-hour video on posture designed to be shown in the public schools. It appeared to be aimed at middle-school students.

Kids Storage Chest

I was quite impressed by the first twenty minutes or so of the video. The narrator covered a number of reasons why students might develop poor posture, with emphasis on the psychological and social pressures faced by children in our society. He also did an excellent job of explaining the harmful physical effects of poor posture - shallow breathing, restricted circulation, back and shoulder pain etc.

Kids Storage Chest

The narrator was a man of about thirty who had very good posture himself. As he alternated between sitting on a high stool and standing he demonstrated - without specifically talking about it - what good posture looks like.

But then, in the final minutes of the video, he addressed the question of how students could improve their posture. His basic message? "Stand (or sit) up straight." In other words, pretty much what parents and teachers sometimes tell their kids and what passes for posture advice in most magazine and newspaper articles on the subject.

Interestingly enough, when the narrator illustrated "standing up straight" he stiffened himself a bit, thereby losing his natural easy upright stance.

Admonishing someone to "stand up straight" is at best useless advice. When children are told to do this, they typically do what they need to get the parent or teacher off their case. Usually they stiffen themselves up, lifting their chest and pulling their shoulders back. More often than not they will also arch their lower back a bit.

This semi-military stance typically lasts for a minute or so and then they're back in their usual slump. Which is just as well because all they've done to "stand up straght" is rearrange the pattern of tensions in their body. And perhaps develop some antagonism to the person who told them to do this - and to the whole notion of posture improvement.

Professor John Dewey, the American philosopher, public education reformer and longtime student of F. M. Alexander, the developer of the Alexander Technique, had a very clear understanding of the problem:

"It is," he wrote, "as reasonable to expect a fire to go out when it is ordered to stop burning as to suppose that a man can stand straight in consequence of a direct action of thought and desire. The fire can be put out only by changing objective conditions; it is the same with rectification of bad posture.

"Of course, something happens when a man acts upon his idea of standing straight. For a little while, he stands differently, but only a different kind of badly. He then takes the unaccustomed feeling which accompanies his unusual stance as evidence that he is now standing straight. But there are many ways of standing badly, and he has simply shifted his usual way to to a compensatory bad way at some opposite extreme."

The posture training video I saw was clearly useless. But beyond that lies the sad irony that the students forced to view it were almost certainly sitting in chairs and at desks pretty much guaranteed to promote poor posture. Most schools today use standardized furniture that makes no allowance for students' different sizes and shapes, furniture chosen to save a few dollars and make them easy for the custodial staff to stack and move.

Moreover, they likely were forced, because of heavier and heavier textbooks, to carry overloaded backpacks to and from school - backpacks that distort their young spines in ways that may well cause them serious physical problems later in life. Amazingly enough, some new schools are being build with no storage lockers - presumably to prevent drugs being stored - so these packs have to be carried from class to class as well.

Neither the dreadful school furniture nor the heavy loads would ever be tolerated in the workplace. Government regulations, union pressure and the compelling threat of lawsuits insure that adult workers are not subjected to the harmful conditions our school kids are faced with.

If you are a parent, I urge you to take a close look at those conditions. Try carrying a backpack that weighs as much, relative to your own body weight, as the one your kid carries. You may need to use two packs to get enough weight. Take a look at the school furniture your child has to use. If at all possible do so during an actual class so you can observe how students deal with it. Be sure to sit at a desk yourself for at least one class period.

You may be amazed - and appalled - at what you discover. Hopefully you will be motivated to bring pressure on your local school board to issue spare textbooks that can stay at home and to make desks and chairs of different sizes available in classroom.

Your kids will thank you.

Essential Guide to Creating a Child's Bedroom

Whether you're preparing your first nursery or trying to turn a children's den into a teenage living space, we've got some great ideas and expert advice to help you create the perfect children's room without breaking the bank.

Kids Storage Chest

From a baby's first nursery to a teenager's bedroom, decorating a room for your children can be a tricky look to get right, but there are a few basic rules to follow to get it right.

Kids Storage Chest

Ideas for a nursery

When you plan a room for a newborn, bear in mind that decorating a nursery can be as much about creating a comfortable space for you as for your child.

Decoration

Calm and comfort are all-important for newborns, so choose delicate shades and tactile fabrics for cosiness. Add a pretty mobile above the cot but make sure they are hung high enough to be out of reach when your child is old enough to stand.

Furniture

Rather than furniture specifically designed with babies in mind, choose well-made items that can adapt with your child. For example, a chest of drawers can be topped with a mat to make a changing table, and a two-in-one cot bed will last until your baby is ready for a grown-up bed.

Window treatments

Blackout blinds are a good choice for babies' rooms. They make it much easier to settle small children during the day or on light evenings and should help stop them waking up at dawn in the summer months. Roller blinds also allow you to let in as much natural light as possible at other times.

Temperature

To avoid your baby becoming too hot or cold, don't position their cot right next to a window or by a radiator. It may also be a good idea to invest in a room thermometer and try to keep the room at around 18°C.

Ideas For a toddlers bedroom

As they grow, energetic toddlers will need a place for supervised play, as well as a secure and cozy bed to encourage them to snuggle down alone at night.

Decorating

Children grow out of the latest fads as quickly as their first pair of shoes, so rather than succumbing to an entire room of Dora the Explorer, choose a neutral backdrop and introduce colour with textiles, graphic wall stickers and fun accessories. A feature wall in a bright and lively wallpaper is also an easy way to change a nursery into bedroom.

Furniture

Opt for a wardrobe with a pole that can be raised as they grow older. Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets. Open drawers can be used to climb, so use child-proof drawer latches on lower drawers.

Storage

Store toys in a variety of containers, according to their size. Combine see-through plastic storage crates, trunks and toy boxes with tubs, baskets, over-door organisers and mini-drawers. Categorise things so that they make sense to your child and arrange them so that they're easy to take out and put away.

Lighting

Dimmer switches are a boon for checking on a sleeping toddler and can be left on low for an infant who's afraid of the dark. A glowing lamp or nightlight is also a good idea, but make to keep it out of reach.

Safety

Cover electrical sockets and keep trailing cords out of reach. Childproof the windows with latches that will allow the window to open no more than four inches and keep window areas clear of furniture so that children aren't tempted to climb onto them to reach windows.

Ideas for older children's bedrooms

Older children will relish having some input in the way their bedroom looks and will hanker after their own den for games and sleepovers with friends.

Decorating

Use their favourite colours, textures and motifs in a way that suits your home - If bubblegum pink and electric blue go against all your interior style principles, compromise with powder pink or dove grey. Instead of dousing whole walls in vivid colours, add accents with soft furnishings and framed pictures, which can be easily and cheaply updated.

Furniture

Have a spare bed ready for sleepovers. If space is limited opt for a hideaway bed with a pull-out truckle underneath for when friends come to stay. The White Company has stylish designs.

Storage

Adjustable shelves can accommodate big picture books for small kids, then be adapted for paperbacks as well as CDs and DVDs. Make use of wasted hanging space inside a standard wardrobe by fixing up a two-tier system of rails or fill the space at the bottom of the wardrobe with small plastic baskets for storing underwear, socks, nightwear and smaller items.

Lighting

Fairy lights are an easy way to add a magical touch - string twinkling lights round a mirror for a little girl, or pin up a net of lights to create a personal cosmos for a budding spaceman.

Finishing touches

Murals and wall stickers can create a fun focal point in a kid's room. Help them to personalise their space in a shared bedroom by spelling out their names with funky lettering so that they each have their own dedicated area

Ideas for teenagers bedrooms

A teenager's bedroom is a place to study, socialise and sleep. Use spots of bright colour and clever storage to ceate a multi-functional space that meets all their needs.

Decoration

Find the middle ground when you're choosing a colour scheme so that you end up with a look that you can both live with. Instead of all-black walls to ceiling, why not compromise with a single painted feature wall so that they still get their colour fix?

Storage

The key to getting a teen to put anything away is to make sure that it is easily accesible. Hang bulky items like guitars, skateboard helmets and backpacks on heavy duty wall hooks , add clear containers to bookcases to give at-a-glance storage for folded clothes and fix a brightly coloured peg board to the inside of a wardrobe for accessories, jewellery, belts, scarves, bags, sunglasses, etc.

Furniture

Create a dedicated spot where teens can study in peace. Choose a desk big enough to write comfortably and pack in extra space for books and notes with wall-mounted shelving above the workspace. Invest in an adult-size wardrobe and chest of drawers to accommodate a growing collection of clothes.

Style extra

Make a chill-out corner with beanbags, stacks of cushions and low-level seating to keep your living room teenager-free.

Make it personal

Let your children put their own stamp on the decorating scheme and they'll be more likely to take care of it.

Get storage sorted

Keep bedrooms tidy by making sure there's a place for everything.

Get serious about safety

From baby-proofing your nursery to ground rules for teens, basic safety measures can keep kids safe from harm.

Use the space wisely

Create zones for sleeping, work and play with functional furniture and fun accessories.

Planning

Planning a decorating project will save you time, money and effort and produce professional looking results.

Paint, wallpaper and fabric calculators

Work out exactly how much you'll need to complete the job and save money on waste and leftovers

Colour ideas

Be inspired by three different looks aimed at all ages

Nursery

Soft-grey walls are the perfect neutral shade for a new baby's room. Warmth can be added with vibrant limes, pinks and blues in stripes and checks, while pale furniture creates a restful feel and keeps the look clutter free.

Boys

Blues and green's combine to make a striking feature wall and are a good foil for warm, wood furniture and natural flooring. Cheerful motifs on the window treatment add to the sense of fun and create a welcoming look.

Girls

Pink is the obvious choice for a girl, but to prevent it becoming too sugary use a mix of patterns in vibrant shades of raspberry, red and orange. Temper them with white walls and furniture to keep the look fresh and contemporary.

Safety guidelines

Keep kids safe and sound with our essential guide to child-proofing your home

Think about bed location. Don't position the bed underneath a window, directly against a radiator or with shelves, ledges or appliances above that a child can get hold of.

Avoid hanging heavy pictures or mirrors above the bed.

Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets.

Avoid open drawers that can be used as a climbing frame - use child-proof latches on lower drawers.

Avoid bunkbeds if your child is under six. Cabin beds are a better option if you can squeeze them in - there'll be plenty of extra storage underneath too.

Use socket covers to keep plug sockets safe from probing fingers.

Secure all dangling lamp cords to prevent injury from pulling on them.

Childproof the windows. Use latches that will let the window open no more than 10cm.
